Have you ever sat in a room full of sometimes 40+ people? Maybe, right? Now, have you ever sat in a room full of 40+ of the most selfless and giving people in the world? I can say that over the past five years I have had the opportunity to do so.
During the beginning of November 2011 I was given the opportunity to start a really great job that would open up many doors for me and allow me to find a field I truly love to work in. With this job came being “voluntold” for the first time (but certainly not the last time lol) that I would also be expected to be a part of the Hope North Suicide Prevention Committee here in Thompson, Mb.
In being a part of this committee, I get to hang out with like minded people all also in the business of helping other people. From counsellors, to mental health workers, to first nations representatives, to youth service agencies, the health authority, and many many others I cannot put my finger on right now. All of these people gather as one to plan initiatives to help promote life and prevent suicide in our northern region. Every year we run a Hope Forum/Conference with special guests and help out with other events within the community. Every year there’s a couple things that happen to me. 1) there is always a time during the conference where I get goosebumps from either something someone has said or done for someone else and 2) there is always a time after the conference where I am able to reflect and in that time I am able to feel so humbled to be in the company of so many great people.
So on this Saturday, being as how many of the members of the Hope North Committee were volunteering their time at the Defeat Depression Walk here in Thompson, I would like to send a special thank you to all of those members for everything they do for our community and our people and for all of the time and effort they put into to helping people in our region promoting that life is worth living and that tough times don’t last, only tough people do.
Hope North Suicide Prevention Committee. You my heroes.
PS- Our tagline for Hope North is: “Where there is life, there is hope”. I heard this somewhere before and finally figured it out.
Check out: Individual by The Salads (I cannot find a good version on youtube)…good heavy tune, great message.
But ill leave you with this one instead, the quote on my Hope Forum shirt was taken from this tune. Enjoy.
